Today marks 250 years since the Continental Congress voted to declare independence from Great Britain in 1776. The Fourth of July is the day Congress formally adopted the text of the Declaration of Independence, the document that has always guided our nation. As we commemorate our nation’s semiquincentennial, Susan Corke of The Contrarian advises us to use the Declaration of Independence as the “standard against which to measure the health of our democracy.” In her article, she examines how our country has upheld the principles upon which it was founded.

The President’s Fiscal Year 2027 budget proposal would eliminate $4 billion infunding for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), cutting off vital support to approximately 6 million low-income households that rely on the program to afford home heating and cooling. This proposal comes at a time when energy insecurity is already at alarming levels, and low-income families need support now more than ever. Please ensure that the funding for this critical program remains intact.

The Wright County jail is making space to hold 120 folks who have been incarcerated at the Sherburne County Jail. Because Sherburne is boarding detainees for ICE, they need more room. So, they are sending their non-ICE related arrests to WC because they make more money off of ICE detainees. Botton line: Wright County is making money off of ICE detainees as well because we are boarding for Sherburne County.

The upcoming Wright-Sherburne Pride Festival in Monticello takes place on Saturday, July 18. It is the region's exurban LGBTQ+ celebration featuring food trucks, vendors, games, and community resources. The festival is open to all ages and is both tobacco and alcohol-free.
